Yesterday was pretty much a complete day of rest for me. I got up in the morning at 6:45 and went on a five mile run with Michelle A. It was boring because it was around the track, I felt pretty dehydrated, too. After that I came back to the dorm and watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (I watched Part 2 later the same day). It was super relaxing and I was eating a loaf of fresh bread that I bought from Mlimani City during the movie. The loaf was huge and I bought it fro 1200/=, which is super cheap for its size.
Later on I went with a group to go out to a bar in ‘Mzungu Land.’ Mzungu land is basically a little pocket community in Dar that is mostly white people. It is really weird and there are a few different ones all around the city. The white people are ex-patriots, people who are from different countries but have moved to Dar. We went to a really expensive, but really enjoyable Irish pub called ‘The George and Dragon’ and got pretty drunk. A lot of people in my group opened up to me and told me that they are really glad that I am on the trip and that they think I am a really good person. It is always encouraging and uplifting to hear that from the people I surround myself with because it reassures me and makes me understand that I really just might be making a difference in their lives, however large or small that difference may be. And that reassurance fills me with hope.
It was funny to watch all the girls last night. Many of them were pawning drinks off of the old ex-pat men who sat at the bar. Men whose business is in ‘oil’ and who claimed to be ‘very rich, indeed.’ It worked for most of them because such men are eager to share their wealth with women who look so young and who are willing to talk to them for booze. For me, some Chinese guys bought me a round of really good hot wings because I was there with all of the girls, haha!
One more thing about last night… so Bob, Laura Norman, Anna, Hannah and I all bought a round of ‘Absinthe.’ It is a very potent, hallucinogenic liquor that is rare in the States. It is transparent blue in color and smells intensely like black licorice; the taste is strongly of peppermint and sticks to the inside of your mouth long after it burns down your esophagus. It was enjoyable partly because of the burn and partly because of its novelty. Who knows if I will ever try it again? One shot cost me 7000/=, so it was pretty expensive but totally well worth it.
