Today was my first day volunteering at the Amka school. We arrived at the place at around 8:00AM and the kids were all outside the school doing their daily ‘assembly’. They were all singing and looking adorable in their blue sweaters, pants and light blue undershirts. There were 34 of them. “Teacher. Teacher. Welcome Teacher” they yell chanted in unison at us when we arrived. They then sang a number of songs and even prayed to start the day. Then they all ran to the bathroom across the schoolyard, kicking up the dust with their feet. Anne then proceeded to show us the place. Starting with the kitchen and bathroom. The stove really stuck out to me, it was basically a hole with 2 steel bars mortared horizontally over it. Then we saw the new half built dormitories. We were told during the tour a little bit of the short history of the school and it is amazing! Inspiring… I’ll try to write some of it down later.
