Nerves and the Small World

I went for a run this morning!  I found myself awake rather early and felt the dirt road that runs parallel to our camp calling my name.  I stretched a lot first, then went.  It felt great, although tiring.  The sun over the landscape blended the colors of the sky into a beautiful shade of orange and blue.

So tomorrow marks the first day of my research project data collection!  I feel kind of nervous about finding my legs, about actually finding respondents to my interview questions and to my Dietary Diversity Questionnaire.  I think, mainly, that I just need to talk to my translators first.  If I can get to know them early then I think that I will be able to find my legs much more quickly and thoroughly.  It is all very exciting, but right now at this moment I am chiefly feeling sun-worn and tired.  According to the research timeline I wrote up earlier, tomorrow I need to verify the foods on my Questionnaire and meet local leaders and my translators.

Today I met Leboy Oltimbau, who is one of the translators.  It is such a small world!  He immediately asked me if I knew Lori Stanely, my study abroad advisor/contact at Luther College.  She has met Leboy before and apparently considers him her ‘African Son.’  He was one of her field researchers back when she was doing her own research with the Maasai and their medicinal herbs a few years back.  It turns out that Leboy and I even had 4 mutual friends on Facebook… cool!
