Research Challenges

Today has been moving slowly so far.  It is officially day 1, week 1 or our actual research component.  We ‘met’ with the ‘chief chairman’ of Olasiti earlier this morning.  By ‘met’ I mean that he basically talked in rapid Kiswahili with Dr. Kessy, our on hand archaeology expert.  I am disappointed by this because I was hoping to have had the chance to ask some questions about the local community and foods.  Oh well, I think that I just need to realize that this whole process will be slow and that I should just trust that my project will begin to take shape soon.

We, the anthropology group of 14 who will all need to utilize our 5 translators to collect data, are faced with the challenge of how we should work out our logistical use of them.  How do we decide who gets to go with a translator and when?  What are our best options for a solution to this?

I am feeling more confident now about my project after talking to a few of the translators about it, especially Leboy.  We translated most of the foods in my questionnaire into Kimaasai and I also verified that the foods are accurate in the area with him.
