Makundu versus Makandi

This morning I went out with a few people to shadow their interviews.  It went well, but I decided to leave and walk back to camp early.  We were in town so I bought a stack of packaged, crème-filled cookies from the mini-supermarket for 1000/=.  My walk back was totally chill, eating the whole bag of cookies.  I love those things!  I realized during the walk just how badass I feel doing research here in Africa.  I mean who gets to do that as an undergraduate student?!  The wind was literally blowing all around me, swirling dust in the road.  I took a bite of a cookie and looked out over the dry, Boma littered land around me.  Dust devils swirled tall and the mountains looked blue upon the fading horizon.  I am in Africa.  In the distance red outlines of people in shukas walk upon dusty cattle roads, going only God knows where alone in the heat.

In the afternoon I went, in Walter’s rocking land rover, to conduct interviews in a nearby, off the road village called Oltukai.  By off the road I literally mean quite a way off the road.  Walter just drove through the bush to get there.  Okay, in all honestly what he drove on was less of a road and more of an ill-defined pathway of dust through the bush.  We drove for maybe 20 minutes through the bush before coming upon our targeted Boma.  I walked from this Boma with Leboy (he was dressed up in his Maasai warrior outfit) to another Boma with Michelle Anderson, too.  There were a bunch of kids around, walking naked save for dusty, barely worn shukas.  Flies seemed to keep attacking their open mouthed faces.

During my interview I accidently said the word ‘makundu’ instead of ‘makandi’ when referring to the food that is a mixture of maize and beans.  ‘Makundu’ means ‘asshole’ in Kiswahili… Leboy lost his shit, he couldn’t stop laughing!  It was ridiculous!  I felt pretty embarrassed but I also knew that is was pretty funny.  Also during the interview a 13 year old girl basically proposed to me, but I told her that I had a girlfriend!  Her Mom was like, “but can’t you have 2 wives?”… it was one of the craziest cultural experiences I think that I’ve ever had today at that Boma!
