Safari!!

Today was quite the adventure!  We safari-ed at Lake Manyara National Park again.  Almost immediately in the morning we saw 4 elephants alongside the road, clearly one of them was a matriarch because the other three were young.  Just underneath her, trying to hide from the sun (and from the sight of tourists like us) stood a baby elephant!  It was adorable to say the least!

Driving around on the park roads I got to stand up in the jeep and look out the top.  Over my head was the lift up to of the jeep, providing a day’s worth of shade from the sun.  The wind and the dust blew in my face all day, and by midday I was very dirty!  My nose really was brown with dirt!

One thing that I want to mention quickly about the Maasai is their smell.  It is imbibed in the handle of the blade that I bought in Engikaret the other day.  It is the smell of iron and earth and blood.  It is unpleasant and reminds me of death, smelling it now it is unlike any smell I’ve ever smelled, it was also in the ‘medicinal soup’ that I drank at the orpul.

Anyways, back to the safari.  In the morning the wildlife that I saw included elephants, baboons, giraffe, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, impalas, kingfisher birds, silver-cheeked hornbills, tree hyrax, a curious blue and red lizard, ostriches, oxpeckers on the giraffes, little Dik-diks, warthogs, and water buffalo.  When we visited the sulfuric hot springs I saw hippos in the distance… even a baby one!  My binoculars were really handy all day today and yesterday.  After leaving the hot springs I even saw a lioness chilling up in a tree!  It was incredible… it was hunting and looked hot.  I took plenty of pictures on the journey.

The landscape in Manyara National Park is stunning; from groundwater forest to vast open expanses.  I’m so glad that I chose to have this adventure even though it can be tiring sometimes and extremely busy.  Not to mention missing everyone 8,000 miles away.  I can feel growing pains and for that I’m thankful.  There have been many challenges, all of which I have done my best to face and overcome with a positive attitude.
