So yesterday on the way back from Bongoyo Island, which was fantastic by the way, lying about 3 miles from the coast of Dar, the engine of our ‘boti’ died. After a while of just sitting there getting rocked violently by the waves, our Tanzanian guides began jumping out of the boat and yelling frantically back and forth at each other in fast Kiswahili, taking out their phones from zip-locked baggies—one was even filling buckets of water and dumping them over the side of the boat! It was hilarious, but slightly terrifying. We were probably 2 or 3 miles from any land. I have videos of it up and some pictures on Facebook.
Right now I am sitting underneath the ‘degree tree’ on campus. It is a great place to sit and do homework; people watch and catch some free wifi. The campus here is pretty large, housing some 17,000 undergrad students during the academic year. It is not that packed yet since their school year does not start until October the first.
