I have been in Dar es Salaam now for five days! It has been great getting to know everybody over the course of the first week. I am really excited to get to work with what seems to be a fun, curious group of people. By curious I mean intellectually curious; I have had a great many deeply intellectual conversations about everything from religion to Beyonce with people. I always learn so much when I have them so I love it!
We have been traveling around the city all week, going to museums, cultural centers and bars together. Yesterday we went to “mock-um-bee-show” (as I spelled it in the Nokia phone they issued me on Monday), which is a ‘cultural center’ based in the center of Dar es Salaam. There was literally a traditional village set up, with Masaai mud-houses and some very sexually-charged dancing by ‘traditional’ tribal dancers. I even got a chance to dance with one of the sweaty, booty popping ladies! It was fun, but kind of weird.
