Today we did a variety of fun things. In the morning we took a long daladala ride to the other end of the island. Once there we got snorkeling gear, flippers and masks, and set sail to swim with dolphins! There were a few pods out there, swimming very fast. There were also pods of mzungu tourists in boats chasing them around. There was a boat full of Chinese businessmen, naturally all dressed up in their full business regalia, frantically trying to capture videos of the dolphins with their iPads. It was hilariously stereotypical to see them holding those things up, trying to capture a moment of natural beauty! I didn’t see any dolphins underwater unfortunately, but it was fun swimming in the deep water, entirely unaware of what could be lurking in the depths beneath me. We all decided on the boat ride back to shore that the experience was definitely a big dolphwin.
Later we visited some friendly Red Colobus monkeys, a species endemic to Zanzibar (and maybe one other place…?). I got some great pictures of them and their babies. Apparently chimpanzees used to hunt them and decimated their population. It was a long day of touring.
Tonight we ate at the most expensive restaurant that I have probably ever been to; on the beach, two men playing romantic music for us, extremely expensive food like warthog, and even some dancing with Molly, my program director! It was great! I got Thai noodles because they remind me of Beth. They were fantastic, but slightly worse than the ones on our long ago date to City Café in Rochester, MN!
