This last weekend was pretty great, full of hard work and interesting times. On Friday we went to eat as a whole group at an Ethiopian restaurant. We sat, four around a small circular table, as they brought out huge circular dishes with our meals on them. Lining the bottom of the dish was a thin layer of spongy bread, on which they dumped from their bowls our meals. I had a spicy chicken mixture, which was entirely hot but great. It was a really fun night! Afterwards we went back and many of us hung out in our room, swapping stories.
The next day began with hard work on my annotated bibliography for my research proposal. It went well, for the most part and I made good headway on it that morning. In the afternoon our group took a daladala to a place well past the road by Mwenge market to watch the Annual Goat Races! It was a hilarious, but extremely well cultured, event. Many Tanzanians, Europeans, etc. and lots of alcohol. People were betting on the races and were just flat out drunk, mostly. Many mixtures of accents littered the festive field, with young butterfly faced girls and old men hitting on much younger women. My roommate, Bob, got completely smashed. Drinking something like 17 drinks total of Savannah hard cider (6% alcohol by volume) and Kunyagi gin. I had to take him home at about 5 o’ clock because he was so drunk! The Bajaji ride cost 13,000 shillings, but he paid me back for it later. I had a really great fun time at the races!
Most of Sunday was spent working on homework, save for the two hours I skyped with Beth and my parents, at 4pm and 5pm, respectively (so 8am and 9am respectively back in the Midwest). It’s always nice to talk to them so often with Skype! I am greatly thankful for it.
Now today begins the hard busy two weeks ahead. With class virtually from 8:30am-4:45pm every day. Not to mention the work for class every night. It is going to be a busy, wild ride.
