Maasai Greetings and Stories

Right now I am in Arusha about to set off on my 6-week safari.  I really enjoyed my time last week in Babati!  It’s colder up here than in Dar es Salaam, which I really have liked.

Our day began in Engikaret, a Maasai village, lying quite a ways away from Arusha.  After lunch we had a lesson about greetings in ‘Kimaasai’ language.  For guys, an Elder will offer their hand (or they will place their hand on the top of our head) and say ‘Sopi’ to which we must respond ‘Epa’.  For girls the greeting is ‘Takwenya’ to which the response is ‘Eko’.  We got a crash course in actually using these when we walked into what would turn out to be my first ‘Boma’—which is basically a small village within the village of Engikaret where one Elder man lives with all of his wives and family—soon after our lesson to greet all of the mamas standing there in one long line.  It was pretty intimidating, but after the first few I got used to it.  These mamas are in charge of the ‘cultural center Boma’ for the village; it was built by the Maasai as a place to share their culture with outsiders like us!  We toured the mud plastered huts there after the greetings.  They are very dark inside, with only a couple of windows about the size and thickness of a glass coca-cola bottle.

After that we followed a few of the male Maasai elders around in the bush.  They showed us the different plants there and explained their uses.  It was hot but I enjoyed it, especially when they fashioned tooth brushes for us from Acacia branches.  It actually worked, too, and my teeth felt super clean afterwards!

That night we had a campfire underneath the star struck open sky.  I sat in between 2 Maasai Elder men away from the rest of the ACM group, adorned in my shuka.  It was a little weird at first and again intimidating, but I soon got pretty comfortable sitting with them.  One of them offered me a cup of very strong smelling orange alcohol, but I just passed it on to the Elder to my left because he did not have one yet.  I wanted to have it, but oh well.  It’s probably good that I didn’t!  It was a long peaceful campfire with many questions asked back and forth between our groups (which took a long time to translate).  I’m really glad that I stayed after other people went to bed because I heard a couple of awesome Maasai stories.  Garret asked our Maasai guide how he got the two identical deep scars on his upper arms.  He said that when he was a young man he was herding goats underneath a large Acacia tree when a leopard jumped down off a branch and killed one.  He quickly pulled out his small machete and threw it at the leopard, striking it in the neck.  The leopard charged him but could not bite him because the machete was lodged in at an awkward angle and it could not turn, but it was able to sink its front claws deep into his arms as it died, hitting bone.  Yeah, I’m glad I got to hear that!  What a badass!  I’m sure there are tons of Maasai people with stories like that.  It was late when I went to bed.
