Today was my first full day on campus. I saw a lot of really new, cool things, met some great friends, learned a little Kiswahili and rode a ‘daladala’ to boot. A daladala is a van/bus that gets really very packed. We rode one to the mall today to pick up some necessary items like shampoo, soap and towels. After our brief day of orientation I think that I am really going to like it here a lot. I am surrounded by some really great, curious people who are all very open-minded like me. The weather today was warm and humid, but cool and calm at night. I cannot complain about anything, really.
The view from my porch, on the sixth level of the building I am staying in (Hall III), is absolutely spectacular. It overlooks the Indian ocean in the distance, city spread out just before it. I think that this is going to be a pretty chill semester. We go by ‘African time,’ which is a lot more laid back than ‘American time.’ Right up my alley!
I saw a Vervet monkey today, a little grey flea-ridden thing with a pitch black face. Not ugly by any means, in fact they remind me of cute little tailed children. The way they looked at us so intently as we walked by. The people here look at us like that, too. But I have yet to meet an unkind person.
